Marriage Preparation Program
There is to be a minimum one year period of marriage preparation which involves a three-stage process, including participation of couples in a diocesan-approved program, individual sessions with a priest or deacon, and parish formation programs.
Before setting a wedding date and commencing with marriage preparation, the priest or deacon is to determine that the parties are free to marry and that nothing stands in the way of a valid and licit celebration. (Canon 1066)
